On Paper was the title piece for Anita’s self produced show; A choreographic showcase which brought together emerging and established choreographers to present pieces inspired by the theme of hidden illness. On Paper tells the story of Anita’s personal journey with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), a disorder where a person experiences chronic and often debilitating neurological symptoms. Danced to Runner by Dustin O’Halloran and a text written by Anita’s Father Richard Mannings and voiced by Anita.

Dare you to doubt me was a piece made for film, inspired by the constant rejection that most dancers, in particular females, experience in the dance industry. Influenced by and danced to the song of the same name by The Script, Anita wanted to shine a light on the harsh and sometimes inappropriate criticism that female dancers experience during professional training and their careers. In the video, you will witness true words that have been spoken by people during the dancer’s careers, but despite this they have kept going.

Parade - The Giant Wheel is a moving performance inspired by the beauty, power, and impact of people from different walks of life coming together, featuring a 12-foot tall Giant Wheel powered by 5 street artists and accompanied by music and a large community cast of local groups and individual performers.
Autin Dance Theatre uses their unique blend of contemporary storytelling, striking physicality and innovative large designs to transport audiences and communities along a carefully choreographed procession.
The 50-minute itinerant act is punctuated by 3 static moments that celebrate the tension and fracture between our individual identities and our shared collective humanity. Ultimately, Parade is about celebrating different journeys whilst honouring our shared life struggles.
The Giant Wheel carries the performers high above the streets, spins them around ferociously, turning their worlds upside down, at times giving them momentum and speed, and at others rocking them gently back and forth imitating the laborious and repetitive cycle of life.
Parade is an ambitious and scalable street performance that has inclusivity and accessibility at its heart. Local participants can join Parade’s community engagement plans including opportunities for groups to perform alongside the procession and for individuals to join the large-scale movement of mass participation.

OUT OF THE DEEP BLUE is an outdoor physical theatre performance featuring a 13-foot tall Puppet operated by 5 puppeteers and a female dancer.
This spectacle is designed specifically for family and festival audiences and tells the magical story of Eko, a sea giant who rises from the deep ocean and who encounters, on the shore, a courageous little girl called Violet.
The choreography is a larger-than-life ‘pas de deux’, which uses contemporary dance theatre and masterful puppeteering as storytelling tools, accompanied by a mesmerising soundscape.
The performance is in two-parts: a 25-minute promenade of the giant puppet interacting with the location, environment, architecture and the audience, and a 25-minute dance theatre duet located at a set performance space (traditionally the walkabout leads to static show).
Created in 2021, OUT OF THE DEEP BLUE has toured and continues to tour extensively across the UK and internationally. The show has visited over 95 festivals and performing to more than 760,000 audience members.

‘Beyond Words’ seeks to ignite words and celebrate their physicality, blending dance and text in ways that go beyond expected norms.
Combining contemporary movement, gesture, breath, and voice, this groundbreaking new choreographic project seeks to translate written language into dance – used both in meaningful exploration, and in the creation of Helen’s powerful and distinct new dance-theatre work.
Often undertaking themes of grief, identity, and growth, ‘Beyond Words’ holds space for words to learn their bodily power, while the dancer dives into the vulnerable yet restorative relationship between reader, narrative, and text.
Dancers are brought together through playful & unexpected exchange to create compelling new modes of physical storytelling that ‘break language’ – resulting in explosive, dynamic, and deeply moving dance-theatre that unsettles and inspires its audiences.

Language play through movement, is a fantastic approach to exploring well-being and the practice of empathy in education and community outreach– from primary schools to adult learning centres.
By exploring poetry through movement, we quite literally, ‘step into’ another’s world, navigating its unfamiliar terrain in ways that encourage both a deep connection with the self, and others.

Telling the story of a widower attempting to care for his sons, and the sudden invasion of a character called ‘Crow’ – five dance performers take audiences on a continuous journey of grief, humour, despair and resilience in a highly charged and controversial new work of dance-theatre.
‘Grief is the Thing with Feathers’ is a radical new dance adaptation of Max Porter’s award-winning text.
Through the breadth and depth of Helen Calcutt’s animated cross-arts choreography, each character’s experience of the same loss is vitally exposed. In its wake, we see the immediate birth of ‘Crow’. The ‘spit-level, slight-barbed, snuck in' trickster, embodied with incredible ferocity and skill in brilliantly interwoven ensemble movement. This is the winging backdrop to a very human story. Juxtaposing the grit and fright of a mythic bird – we have the tender yet complex relationship between a father and his sons, and the dualistic bond of siblings who lose a mother. Crow wreaks havoc and distraction until ‘no longer needed’, and another chapter of this family’s devastated lives can take flight.
Blending contemporary dance, gesture and voice, audiences will witness a powerful and compelling new mode of physical storytelling that ‘breaks language’.

Claudia Palazzo is a London born and based artist and dancer working across the intersections and contradictions of dance, performance art, installation, alternative cabaret and film using her body as a responsive site to her environment and territory. Her work exists somewhere between the nightclub, gallery and street, and focuses on the live experience and a place to be able to shift through, let go and sit/deal with. It is often poetic, feral, meditative and violent in its structure, influenced by roots in nightclub culture, inner-city concrete dwellings and psychophysical training. She seeks to establish charged connections and subliminal feedback loops of understanding with an audience in order to process and harness our collective and individual sense of joy, sadness, resistance, power and endurance. Current research is around absorbing impact, damaged support structures, what can represent us in our absence and repair and rebuild.
She is a studio holder at CONDITIONS, a member of drag troupe The Lipsinkers, a member of queer performance and activism collective SPIT and was artist and dancer in residence at GROW Tottenham. Claudia DJ's for The Posh Club - a nightclub in the daytime for the over 60's run by Duckie.
Conrad Kira is a musical artist, producer DJ and sound designer. He comes from Peckham and is a South London native. His musical endeavours span from producing expansive soundtracks to producing industrial drill and grime inspired beats.

There are 26 vertebrae in the adult human spine. I couldn’t order a replacement. My spine is the length of this light.
Claudia Palazzo presents new performance work Our Suspended Corridors. Created and performed alongside musician/producer Conrad Kira with lighting artist Marty Langthorne. The Performance comprises dance, live sound, wheels, text and a lot of strip lights. It explores notions of urban healing and the concrete fetish, the absorption of bone, noise and cement. Navigating the complex tensions between inherent strength and the impact of damage.
Exploring the materiality of concrete and its relationship to movement and bass. The work looks at the mass made urban material of strip lighting, held up by concrete, as a central vehicle to unpack ideas about absorbing impact, fitting in spaces, re-building and replacing the self in space. In an attempt to unfix the self from ableist ideals of mobility and repair, Our Suspended Corridors drills through to expose the pipework of the body and city.
Get up, just get up…up. It’s better to go out on a high.
Some new kind of high rise

"16:1" is an ongoing choreographic series, started during lockdown.
One single dancer records themselves 16 times with slight changes of counts or movements in the same choreography.
Editing all the videos together brings all patterns and canons alive, to create a digital piece of art.
These videos can be projected on walls, or can be on screens.
New videos can be made for your own venue and themes.
This project is still developing: it started as videos online, and it could become art installations should space and budget allow it.

Perception is an award-winning hip-hop theatre piece dealing with how we are all perceived by others. Exploring the invisible struggle for control and self-expression whilst maintaining a front that pretends everything is ok. Do you wonder how you are perceived by others? Do they see the front that you portray or the reality beneath the surface? We are often perceived in a certain way due to a front that is not a reality, the reality is we have lost control. At first we have to strip back the layers, discover the issue and bring it too light to then overpower and control it. Once this control is restored the path before us becomes clear.

REVERIE opened the Dance Umbrella International Festival in London in October 2022
'What a way to open the newest edition of Dance Umbrella...The movement was the definite hero here – it was a celebration of the beauty of bodies, both human and mythical ones.’
‘Like a striking scent of freshly roasted coffee beans in between strong, delightful perfumes. A show like “Reverie” will challenge your perception but also make hope for more.’
Review by West End Evenings
Presented by Dance Umbrella in partnership with The Place
The presentation is co-produced and supported by the Onassis Stegi ‘Outward Turn’ Programme, the Arts Council England and The Lowry.
Enter a metaphorical universe in which all sense of time is lost, where characters evoke a surreal and swirling dreamlike state. Blurring the line between the real and the imaginary, Reverie invites audiences into a ‘fantasy-like’ world in which they might recognise their own emotions, phobias and behaviours. Reverie explores how memories and the past shape our collective narrative. Drawing inspiration from the use of archetypes in Lewis Carol’s Alice and Carl Jung’s theories on the subconscious, the work creates connections between the known and the unfamiliar to demonstrate how interchangeable these states can be.
A visually evocative production which conjures up an emotionally charged landscape of mysterious and captivating images. I was intrigued by its singular vision which successfully blends body and object, and is performed by a charismatic cast.’

Homecoming is an interactive mixed-reality performance tracing the journey of a ghost trying to reclaim its body. Audiences are invited to go through three stages of embodiment, using live dance and technology.
The innovative performance uses live dance, immersive audio, holographic projections and virtual reality. We are employing the newly developed InteractML machine learning tool to create an interactive dance theatre and immersive experience where the audience becomes the protagonist. By using gesture-based triggers, the audience becomes the dancer, unlocking a story through their movement.
Told through the voice of ‘The Watcher’ an eternal being, the story unfolds, inviting audiences to revisit Lena Arbori’s memories through her eyes, learning about Lena’s heartbreaks, hardships and deepest desires. The only way to help Lena jump back into her body is to dance, dance, dance!

This new work emerged in June 2023 as a research period followed by a creation process leading to a premiere of the work on October 7th 2023 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
Kaja Lin Jagodič Avguštin together with Mickael Marso Riviére explore the process of modern migrations, diverse spectres of internal impulses that trigger displacement and the effects it has on personal growth, on relationships and on identity. The orbit is a track of circular motion, an elliptical but never-ending repeating motion. An object of lesser mass orbits around an object of greater mass because it cannot resist the force of its gravity.
An orbit is a cycle. An orbit is a routine.
Movement meets its beginning sooner or later.
Is there a new orbit in which there are no traces of old orbits or beginnings? How much weight can a single person carry and how much can they carry into a new orbit? Perhaps even a whole room, or the weight of another emotionally broken body? Does a body become heavier if it also takes its backpack along?
What will it take to break or fall out the orbit?

In THE REVENGE OF POPPERFACE, the shadow-self or alter ego of artist Gareth Chambers invites audiences to bear witness to the real-time crafting of personal mythologies, through dance, mixed martial arts and boxing practices.
Popperface returns from the dead, leaning into their namesake as the puffed-up, blue-lipped embodiment of excessive amyl nitrate (poppers) consumption. For this 50-minute performance, the occult and operatic throb together, working towards a subterranean crescendo, while bathed in the stretched song of French disco pioneer (and muse of Salvador Dali), Amanda Lear.
An experimental exploration of the masculine drawing on research and development undertaken throughout Hull, Nottingham and in lockdown, crystallised for audiences at Chapter Arts Centre and presented with the support of Arts Council Wales.

Roshni (from the Persian word meaning light or brilliance) is an intimate crafting of dance and live music, made up of three distinctive and engaging dance pieces: The Call, The Light and The Wave which explore the highs and lows of life today. The audience are taken on an emotional journey, through wordless storytelling, eclectic music, percussive dance and upbeat audience interaction, Roshni is both deeply moving and gloriously entertaining.
Just as improvisation is the heartbeat of jazz, improvisation is considered a core part of a solo Kathak dance performance – consequently no performance of Roshni is the same! It is the perfect first introduction to those who have never experienced South Asian dance and something quite different for connoisseurs. Roshni beautifully demonstrates the connection between music and dance.

Mughal Miniatures: The Awakening is a vibrant outdoor performance event for all the family, which celebrates and takes inspiration from the exquisite traditional art of Indian and Persian miniature painting.
Mughal Miniatures is upbeat and fun, with performers in sumptuous costumes creating a spirited and colourful mini world of dance and music. This pop-up, living picture evokes scenes of Indian princely courts and the glory of the Mughal period but with a contemporary twist which overturns expectations and surprises and delights passers-by.
We invite you to step back in time and join us at court to meet the feisty Queen but everything is not as it seems, our well-behaved characters have grown tired of their restrictive frames. With your help they can break free - not only of their pictorial frames but also of society’s expectations!
Indian miniature painting of 9th and 10th century was hugely multicultural, drawing inspiration from many peoples and cultures. In the same way, this project, like all Sonia Sabri Company’s work, is about bringing different artists, forms and cultures into dialogue with each other and demonstrating their complementary nature. A poignant metaphor of our diverse society here in the UK and worldwide.

Inspired by the news that a third of the UK’s young people spend less time outdoors than its prisoners, the UPG Team take a humorous look at a group of humans on the edge of forgetting how to move. As they slowly become aware of the artificial world in which they’re living, they must decide if they’ll swap touch screens for human contact and risk the comfort of their cage for the lure of the great outdoors.
Accompanied by Sir David Attenborough’s narration and an original score from Chris Umney, Zoo has toured nationally & internationally, including for Dance Umbrella.

The myth of the flood is as old as the oldest civilisation: a group of survivors escape the deluge through divine intervention and often, the help of a boat. But the flood we face is not a myth, and we have no one to save us but ourselves.
Commissioned by the Time & Tide Bell organisation to inspire action on sea level rise, On The Strandline is the UPG Team’s street-ballet, staged on a skeletal boat and narrated by a child, it is often accompanied by climate change debates and wrap around.
